When & Where

It all takes place in from the Monday to Friday of the May half term holiday.  Since 2004 we have gone to the Scripture Union site at Great Wood which is in the Quantoch Hills near Bridgwater in Somerset. It has all the facilities we need to make a fun holiday.

History

4 companies over recent years joined together for a Junior Section Holiday, which is held on the half term covering the Whitsun bank holiday. Prior to this most companies ran holidays on their own. Some dating back to the late 1970's. A number of the staff today have attended Junior Section Holidays in the past as boys.

The companies are:

  • 10th Mid Surrey, Christ Church Methodist with St Philip (C of E)
  • 11th Kingston & Merton, Morden Park Baptist
  • 14th Kingston & Merton, Kingston Methodist Church
  • 18th Worcester Park, Worcester Park Baptist

Themes

Each year we set a theme, which we hope will attract boys to the holiday. The activities, food and any outings are usually linked to out theme. For example one year we had an aviation theme, so we had a day out to the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton, another time it was a naval theme and the day out was to the Historic Naval Docks at Portsmouth, and a Roman theme where we made standards, built viaducts and roman chariots to race.

Teams

Boys are paired up with a friend, and put into teams. Each team has it's own hut for sleeping in, and all boys eat together at meal times. The teams also compete for points during the week.

Activities

There is a mix of sports, like football, rounders, cricket etc, adventure activities like the low ropes course, and county walk, and crafts such as painting. In addition we have activities that test the teams brains, and their skills at working together. Above all we try to have as much fun as possible.

Swimming

Swimming will be on the list of activities, we have an outdoor pool on site, and possibly a visit to a local indoor swimming pool for something a bit warmer!

Venue

The Great Wood site is operated by Scripture Union, and is fabulous. Some photos will be posted in the near future.
